Twins!

As most of you already know, we have twins on the way! We knew we were pregnant but were keeping it under wraps until our first dr's appointment. I was obsessing over how this appointment was going to go, just hoping and praying that we would see a healthy baby on the sonogram! Adam and I joked about twins with the dr before the sonogram. (And we were totally joking because there are no twins in the family and we really didn't think it was a possibility!) She laughed and assured us that we didn't want twins. "One healthy baby at a time, twin pregnancies are complicated" she said. She started the sonogram and the screen was facing away from me. She got a look on her face that scared me to death. My heart sunk. She turned the screen to us and said "Well there are your twins!". I can honestly say that never in my life have I ever been so shocked. Disbelief is the best word. This isn't even a scenario that I had even imagined in my whole life! After telling her to shut up, I asked her how this could be possible with no twins in the family! She said that you don't need to have them in the family.

They each have their own sac so they are fraternal. She told us this was much less risky than identical, where they share a sac. Before I even had a chance to get excited about all of this, the conversation went very serious and she started explaining all the risks, all the vitamins, the bedrest, the early delivery. If the babies haven't come by 36 or 37 weeks, she will schedule a c-section. I will be seeing three doctors: my OB, a high risk OB, and a GI specialist for the reflux. Most people would think that the news of being pregnant with twins would be so exciting! And I am excited. But so very worried. I just hope and pray these babies will make it through this pregnancy and be delivered healthy and developed enough to where they won't be in the hospital for weeks or a month or longer! People keep asking me about all the logistics of taking care of 2 (actually 3) babies since Harrison will barely be 2. And honestly those things aren't on my mind. Just focused on this pregnancy. The rest will work itself out and if anyone can figure it out, its me and Adam!

I go to my doctor on Feb. 4 and she will do another sonogram. On Feb. 8 I go to the high risk OB and he will also do a sonogram and several tests. Mid to late March we should find out the sexes. Its common for women pregnant with twins to go on bedrest at 28 weeks. My doctor will go by how I am doing before making the call. That puts us near the end of May, so my goal is to have everything in order by then!

I have been feeling so down and out through this first trimester that I haven't been blogging, cleaning, shopping or doing much of anything! First trimester will be over next week and I am hopeful that the morning sickness will be completely over with too. I haven't even gained a pound yet because I can't eat all that much and its time to start gaining weight! I am not even a LITTLE worried about losing the baby weight because I am going to be taking care of three babies! Talk about a workout! Although I haven't gained weight, I do have a little bump. I am 11 weeks along and I look like I did at 18 weeks with Harrison! I am starting to see a tad more fat in the "love handle" region and my waist has expanded 2 inches. So I guess my weight is just shifting around right now.

Harrison has been a trooper through all of this. I have managed to keep him happy and still play with him as much as before. We just have a little more cartoon and book time and a little less outdoor playground time. He kisses my tummy and says hi to the babies.

I keep thinking his talking is going to level off at some point but he is still making amazing progess. We can get him to say just about any word and he regularly talks in sentences. He can say his name. We have a photo album with random relatives' pictures in it and he can point to and name 30 of them! He loves this game.

He loves girls in general, but he really likes the older blonde girls that live 2 doors down. We were visiting with them the other day and he took the older one's hand. I think she is 8? He led her all the way back to our house and around the yard, showing her everything. Everytime I got too close to him, he would shoo me away like I was embarassing him! He wouldn't even hold my hand with his other hand!

He had a wonderful Christmas. Santa brought him a train that he can ride around the house, a mini trampoline, giant blocks, a cozy coupe, and lots of books and puzzles. On Christmas day, we took off to Hawaii. He did pretty good on the flight. We had a few rough moments, but overall it was better than expected. He loved the beaches. Such a beach bum! We would go to the beach mid-morning and he would play until he literally passed out. Then he would nap for like 4 hours! We were on a cruise ship and a toddler in a state room is very challenging. Because I had morning sickness + sea sickness, we spent more time in the room that we would have hoped.

Here are some pix from Christmas and Harrison's adventures in Hawaii. Enjoy!
